It’s been more than a year since Franz passed and Mondays are not the same without him. We miss him -playing with him, hanging out and the never-ending late-night conversations. We even miss fighting with him. The first Monday after he passed away we gathered at Sonnenraum , like “ every Monday“ and shared an intense and emotional time together. One year later we decided to publish the recordings of that night, uncut :
Franz was restless – especially when it came to music. He must have written dozens of compositions for the band, sometimes overnight. The impact he had on us is immense. More than anyone, he shaped the identity of the band.
Today (24.05.2026) would have been his 39th birthday. „Think I Found Something“ is one of Franz’s earlier works and, over the years, has become a classic in the band’s repertoire. This version was recorded in Bamako, Mali, in February 2019.
Als das Omniversal Earkestra im Jahr 2019 nach Westafrika reiste, um dort mit malischen MusikerInnen inspiriert von dem Sound der 70er „Le Mali70“ aufzunehmen, kam im Studio in einem seltenen freien Moment die Idee auf, einmal über das Material der malischen 70er Jahre hinauszugehen und stattdessen etwas aus dem Earkestra-Repertoire aufzunehmen. Zusammen mit den malischen MusikerInnen sollte das Stück sozusagen ein neues westafrikanisches Gewand bekommen – wie als Gegenstück zur Grundidee von „Le Mali70“, wo die Musik der malischen 70er durch die Berliner Band neu zum Klingen gebracht wird.
Die Wahl fiel auf „Think I Found Something“, einen Song von Franz Albert Stahl, dem Baritonsaxophonisten der Band, der hier zu Beginn auch mit einem Text von Lukas M. Hofmann zu hören ist. Gegen Ende kommt die Sängerin Mariam Koné aus Bamako mit Texten auf Französisch und Bambara zu Wort.
Da diese Aufnahme nicht direkt in das Konzept von „LeMali70“ passte, war es zunächst gar nicht für eine Veröffentlichung vorgesehen. Nun verließ Franz Stahl im Mai 2025 sehr unerwartet diese Welt. Er hinterließ ein tiefes Loch, aber auch sehr viele schöne Erinnerungen und Kompositonen, unter anderem auch dieses Stück – Think I Found Something – welches hier ein Jahr nach seinem Tod den Weg in die Öffentlichkeit finden soll.
Ain’t no two ways about it, Franz Stahl was born to play the baritone saxophone. He found his calling very early, when he was roaming the scrapyards of his youth to collect stray pieces of metal piping and craft unusual musical instruments out of them, inspiring his famous composition „Think I Found Something“, which he first recorded on the limited edition cassette „The Adventures of Grandmaster Franz on the Wheels of Stahl“. He then formed his first band, called <strong>My Name Is Franz And I Have No Shame</strong>, with bagpipe player Rick O’Suave, whose debut album, „It’s a Katja Riemann’s World“, got favourable reviews and was awarded five stars by „Amateur Gardening“ magazine.
